Hi there,
I am curious to know what everyone does for a living. The reason I ask is that I have always (unknowing it would seem) organised my life around the avoidance of speech and meeting new people. I have always had goals and visions on my future, but am constantly in conflict with the deep desire to avoid the pain of speeking. This confict ment I often went from job to job. My determination would get me into a challanging situation, and my stutter would ensure I hated every moment of the job so would find a way out as fast as I could. I am now a software developer and do everything online (once again no people contact). Is this a common pattern? Can anyone else relate??

I am a freelance web developer. Most of it is based on the internet however it also involved recieveing and making quite a few phone calls. What was originally daunting is now a breeze really.

Hey Jason, Im always impressed when I hear about people that have had the strength to take on their fears and come out on top. You should start your blog on fluency quest and talk us through how you did it. What were your fears, what were your motivations, what did you say to yourself to push you through those tough times. It would be a great story, and certainly a story that would inspire others on their tough days.

I'll consider it, I am a bit busy at the moment but I am sure that I can carve out some time in the future.

i'm an computer information systems major. interested in a career in web development, did some freelance and part-time work as a web designer.

initially I was a computer science major because of i thought it was a path of the least possible speaking, but found it wasn't my field and changed it. I didn't want my stuttering to determine my life.

I also want to add that I used to work at a Starbucks and Coffee Bean. Believe it or not, it helped me boost my confidence in speaking and improved my interpersonal skills; glad I put myself through that.

During my college years, I worked as a Lifeguard at several beaches and pools, a Ski Instructor, an Alpine Wilderness Ranger, and a Bird-Hunting Guide. I know... the pay was pretty bad, but we had a lot of fun!

Then, I was a Builder of custom and solar homes; then a Project Manager for a large Land Development & Home Building company (we would buy raw forested land, design large high-end housing plats, then upon 'preliminary plat approval'... clear the forest, build the right-of-ways and roads, put in all the underground utilities, and finally build all the homes; sometimes as many as 150-200 in a plat). I loved all the land development stuff... but didn't enjoy the home building nearly as much. Then, about 12 years ago, I started my own Construction Consulting business, and am also a territory rep. (covering four states in the U.S.), for the construction estimating software that we use.

I work at a retail store that sells clothing right now, before that I worked at the local convenience store but I'm going to school for medical coding because I want out of retail and not because I stutter.
